PEANUTS-MORE THAN MEAT
66The Peanut Flower
Move over carrots and apples
An apple a day may keep the doctor away and carrots may be good for your eyes but the faithful old peanut contains larger quantities of antioxidants than both of these. Classified by most as a nut, the peanut is actually a legume (beans, lentils). Legumes are in a family of edible seeds that are enclosed in pods. These families of seeds (peanuts, beans, lentils, peas) provide the best source of concentrated protein in the plant kingdom. The peanut, flowers above the ground and yet it's fruit gives birth underneath.
Although they have a long history going back as far as being found in Peruvian mummy tombs, it's popularity did not come about til around 1890 by a physician (Dr. John Kellogg) who was trying to come up with a protein substitute for his patients who could no longer get it from meat. Studies show that if peanuts are included in your regular diet, the niacin contained therein will provides protection against Alzheimer's disease.
Some doctors argue that peanuts should always be consumed in small amounts by the obese because of it's high caloric content, but there are other studies that show that eating them more than twice a week reduces the whole weight gain risk.

Great hub thanks, voted up and interesting. I adore peanuts in any form YUM!
Very informative hub about the peanut. I learned new things here including the word Arachibutyrophobia. The way the new to me word started out it sounded like it was going to have something to do with spiders. Haha!
My husband and I love nuts of all kinds and always have peanuts as well as peanut butter in the house along with other kinds of nuts. Up and useful votes!
Nice hub, I don't think I could replace my meat intake with peanuts. I didn't know that nuts were antioxidants.
loveofnight, I love peanuts and nuts of all kinds I eat a lot of raw almonds, walnuts and pecans, and on and on the peanuts go. Healthy is at a whole new level with nuts. I can't imagine a DAY without peanuts. Great review, Thanks and Peace :)
Unfortunately peanuts are about the only nut that I can't stand... Great hub!
It it just the peanut or all kind of nuts I know are good for you. Sadly i just can not stand nuts its the texture maybe. I do love peanut butter so does that count? Hahaha
This is very informative! I am amazed how much I learn from the writers here in Hupbages. I just love this community! Will share your hub with my s/o as he loves peanuts. Good to know of the health benefits, didn't know they were healthier than carrots and apples combined. Wow.
Thanks for a very useful and healthy Hub. I didn't know peanuts had so many good qualities. The annoying thing for me is they make me break out in spots. So, if I eat them, I can't eat more than 10 peanuts. lol. or maybe a teaspoon of peanut butter a day.
Well, according to your Hub, at least I'm getting some benefits. Regards. :)
And why didn't we listen to George Washington Carver - so our soil wouldn't be depleted right now - but thanks so much for this hub. A great reminder and I just put it on my shop list for Saturday.
I'm a lover of peanuts and remember as a child when I visited family in the South and they always grew them. My father would roast them - they are such a super nutritious food - and great for non-meat eaters - and even as an alternative.
Interesting the trivia about peanuts being used for diesel fuel which is probably why it was grown all over the South - something had to fuel all the tractors!
Thanks again -it's on the list!
Interesting hub. I have always had a "thing" for Mr. Peanut.
Thanks for the informative hub, loveofnight. I think only George Washington Carver knows more about peanuts than you.
