CLASSICS AT IT'S BEST
George Burns and Gracie Allen star in their own self named comedy show. Originally broad cast on CBS from October 12,1950 to September 22, 1958. This collection is classic at it's best , a must have for the vintage collector like me. I am watching this as I write and believe me when I say that the laughs never stop.Gracie is a dizzy, well meaning housewife.who has a knack for misunderstanding and misinterpreting everything. George plays himself with his own TV show. He's the straight man is this movie, always toting a cigar and stepping to the side of the screen to analyze the dizziness of his wife. While watching this DVD I can see just how much TV as a whole has changed.Comedians no longer openly smoke and promote smoking, but we have to remember that the Surgeon General did not have any warnings on cigarette packs at that time. In one show she is getting ready to cook some hot dogs so she reads her cook book which tells her that for best results they should not be cooked long, so Gracie begins to cut the hot dogs up (get it don't cook long...lol). She takes whatever she reads literally. In another scene she cooks ten pieces of toast but not to eat,she says that it takes thirty seconds to cook a piece of toast and after toasting her tenth piece she knows that her five minute egg is done. And don't get me started on how she pickles vegetables, she pours straight Bourbon in them. You got it in her mind in order to be pickled the vegetables have to be drunk.
One thing that I like about the old black and white movies is that it takes you through a walk in the past. you get to see the things that were once considered exceptable and those that are not. It was a time when saying pregnant was not said on TV, instead they would say expecting or a bun in the oven. The slang that we use today as well as the dances that they do are much different, by watching them we can see where we once were and where we are today. Words like smooth meant the same as someone telling you that you look awesome or hot in that out-fit. Many years have past since this show but the comedy is still funny. The holidays are coming up and if you do have a grand-mother or father that is still around you can't go wrong with this selection. It's good clean comedy that everyone can watch. You really have to see this movie to believe it, vintage at it's best.

I love Gracie Allen. I listen to an old time radio show and they often broadcast Burns and Allen, she was so funny!
I've never heard of this movie until now! I'll have to check it out, thanks, loveofnight. One of my favorites is It's a Wonderful Life, including of course Casablanca and On the Waterfront. Thank you for sharing this!
I love your hubs.
